Free Us Now guest, Katherine Morrison wrote a book about the 2008 presidential election. The book entitled An Independent Call, chronicles the journey of an Independent New Hampshirite from wary observer of town hall meetings to eventual McCain supporter and volunteer. It is an amusing look at the events of a campaign. From meeting candidates from both sides of the aisle, to becoming a blogger for McCain, to being chewed out on campaign phone calls, to receiving press credentials for the Republican National Convention, this account relates the experience of being a participant at the lowest level politics from an outsider's perspective. A mix of good humor and political opinion from the middle.

Egregious Disrespect of Constitution Requires Your Support in NH

Update on NH Status . . .

The Federal government has gone far enough. We need to draw a line in the sand. If there is further egregious, serious disrespect of the US Constitution by the Federal government, then New Hampshire must reclaim its sovereignty.

HCR6 came out of committee with a surprise "Inexpedient to Legislate" recommendation.

For those that remember it, this is a replay of the resistance against the bills to get NH out of Real-ID. This is unacceptable. Fortunately, we have a playbook. We know what it takes to move this forward: MASSIVE PUBLIC SUPPORT!

New Hampshire Warns Federal Government of civil war!

I have had the discussion about a future ‘rebellion’ many times with many folks. Our own editor here at American Daily Review John Barnhart and I routinely discuss the possibility, likelihood etc of an actual uprising. Often many folks disregard such speculation or talk. I am telling you it is not only ‘possible’ it is becoming increasingly likely and increasingly needed!

We here in New Hampshire have fired the first shot across the bow of the federal government by introducing A RESOLUTION affirming States’ rights based on Jeffersonian principles.

If the only way to reel in the federal government or put an end to their destruction of our nation is ‘force’, then force is exactly what me must use!

Americans Will Pay the Bill for Overloaded Stimulus Package

Rasmusen reports that support for the Emergency Stimulus plan is slipping. This is not surprising since the stimulus has been packed with pork, which by anyone's definition seriously stretches the meaning of emergency. Regular Americans know better than many politicians the basic fact that bills have to be paid, and this proposal leaves Americans holding the tab for a pile of pork. President Obama and House Republicans have shown some willingness to compromise, but the House bill that passed yesterday had not one Republican vote for it and 11 Democrats also oppose it for good reason. Just take a look at a few of the items in this bill that have been stuffed into this bill...

• $20 million “for the removal of small- to medium-sized fish passage barriers.”
• $400 million for STD prevention
• $25 million to rehabilitate off-roading (ATV) trails
• $34 million to remodel the Department of Commerce HQ
• $70 million to “Support Supercomputing Activities” for climate research
• $150 million for honey bee insurance

What Will MSNBC DO?

Watched MSNBC after 8 anytime recently? If you have you'll know they are facing a crisis. George Bush is leaving Washington. Entire shows on MSNBC revolve around the host's biting hatred on the president. This certainly isn't to say that there aren't legitimate reasons to criticize the Bush administration, but guess what he's leaving. Still with a historic inauguration only a day away MSNBC hosts just can't see past their hatered. So what will these shows turn into? Will there be big pockets of dead air, where indignant rants about Bush 43 used to be? Will they look for someone else to tear down, possibly a Governor from Alaska? Is MSNBC a one trick pony, or will they be able to adapt to a popular Democrat as president?

As Governor, Jeanne Shaheen created New Hampshire's first statewide property tax, and also proposed a sales tax. Shaheen also agreed to support an income tax.

I got to Stratham, NH about 9:30 in the morning and met Eric Maurer, Field Director in Rockingham County as well as Let's Get This Right and McCainVictory08.com members Ashley, Ray and Connor. We spent an hour making phone calls and then hit the road to Exeter for some door belling for McCain-Palin, John Sununu and Jeb Bradley.

I wanted to report to you that the McCain/Palin campaign is having a great week in Manchester and across New Hampshire. On Wednesday, thousands of New Hampshire voters came to St. Anselm’s College to hear Senator McCain speak. Even better, Rasmussen just released a poll that shows us within the margin of error in the state of New Hampshire! There is no doubt that New Hampshire is still in play, and we need your help for the next nine days. NASHUA – If Sen. John McCain wins the presidency in a little more than three weeks, his daughter said she'll tattoo "Live Free or Die" somewhere on her body.

Of course, he would have to win in New Hampshire, too, said Meghan McCain, who was in Nashua yesterday thanking volunteers at the McCain-Palin campaign office.

The tattoo, which would probably go on her wrist, would be her way of commemorating her father's run for the presidency, she said. It was in New Hampshire that McCain revived his faltering presidential bid during the presidential primary in January.

"New Hampshire is so important to me and my family," she said.

Earlier, McCain told a supporter that she would be "extremely depressed" if her dad loses in New Hampshire.

"More so than any other state," she said.

Made famous by her blog -- McCainBloggette.com (click for link)-- Meghan McCain has also been on the road publicizing her book for children, "My Dad, John McCain," appearing on national news and talk shows.

McCain signed several of her books yesterday as she greeted supporters.

"Thank you for buying it. It's beating the Obamas' children's book," she told one woman, with a smile.

McCain drove to New Hampshire yesterday morning in a Straight Talk Express Bus. She was traveling from Hofstra University on Long Island, N.Y., after watching her dad aggressively take on Sen. Barack Obama at Wednesday night's presidential debate.

"I'm glad he took the gloves off," she said of her father's performance.

She said her favorite line of the debate was when her father said, "I'm not President Bush."

Most of the time the attacks on her father roll off her back, she said, but she said she was extremely angry about a photo shoot of her father for the magazine "The Atlantic." The magazine hired a stridently Democratic photographer, who later told a blog that she left his eyes looking red and his skin looking bad on purpose.

"It's one of the most disturbing things that's ever happened to me in politics," the junior McCain said.

She also defended her father's attacks on Obama. There would be fewer attacks if Obama had agreed to the 10 town hall debates her father had suggested, she said, reiterating a point her father made during Wednesday's debate. After appearing in Nashua, McCain was off to Dover to thank volunteers there.

McCain’s Growing Net Roots and Donations

The network of McCain supporter sites is going through a growth spurt, right, left, and center. On July 1st, the anniversary of John McCain’s promotion to Commander of Attack Squadron 174 in 1976, the founders of John McCain 2008 Social Network and McCain Now are launching LetsGetThisRight.com. They have worked tirelessly to launch a site that focuses on supporting Senator McCain and local Republicans across the country. They are looking to raise money for a series of candidates in important races.

On the other side of the spectrum, let me welcome Clinton supporters who now support Senator McCain to the club. The establishment and networking of Clinton supporters not willing to support Senator Obama, has been impressive to say the least. Over 125 sites and blogs have emerged within a few weeks. A list of all (or most) is available at Just Say No Deal. Here are a few that have already established a significant following. Clintons 4 McCain, Savage Politics, Puma Party (which includes the Puma Party forum), Done Dems, Hillary Clinton Forum, and Dems 4 McCain. Certainly, not all who have decided not to vote Obama have committed to voting McCain. However, there is mounting evidence that many Clinton supporters will vote McCain.

Some Hillary supporters have even decided to donate to Senator McCain’s campaign on July 4th. As a show of support, many long time McCain supporters have also agreed to contribute on that day. The request is that Hillary supporters make donations in amounts like $5.44, $25.44, or $125.44 and others donate in whole dollar amounts so Clinton supporters can be differentiated and counted.

Local Republicans similarly is a contributor based blog focused on down ticket candidates and state and local Republican candidates.

Blue to Red: Why New Hampshire Could Likely Go For McCain

In the Real Clear Politics Polling Average gives Senator McCain a 1.4% edge over Senator Obama. Certainly this doesn't ensure a McCain victory, but there are a number of factors that give Senator McCain an advantage in the state. First, he is established in NH like no other candidate. He has people who volunteered for him this year, and people who volunteered for him eight years ago. He put all his eggs in the NH basket during the primaries, it not only paid off but it created a fiercely loyal and dedicated group of volunteers who were on his side when everyone else was saying he was toast. The race was essentially between him and Governor Romney, and Governor Romney has done a nice job at mending fences and smoothing over any hard feelings his supporters may have had at the time of the primaries.

McCain fits NH well. 'The Live Free or Die State' is one of the strongest anti-tax states in the union. It is very respectful of people who serve. It is full of New England-style Republicans; a slightly more moderate Republican that recognizes that working with Democrats is simply a fact of life. A necessity in a state is teeters between red and blue, in and a region that that is dominated by Democrats.

The other edge he has is Senator Obama's potential weakness. All polls except one since Senator Obama's 'bitter remarks' give Senator McCain the edge, where prior Senator Obama had the edge. There is a sizable segment of the population that is not dissimilar to the rural PA and OH voters that so decisively rejected Senator Obama in the primaries. The regional industries are different, but there is a large number of hard working middle class voters in small towns or rural areas that are sick of being looked down upon. NH is also another state that chose Clinton over Obama reflecting another similarity with OH and PA.

Demographics are what make NH difficult to call. NH voted Kerry in the last election by a slim margin, and Bush in 2000. It is a growing state with much of the new population migrating from Massachusetts, a decidedly blue state. So it is likely to remain a close race, but it is one that Senator McCain is very likely to win in November.

New Hampshire - The New England Front

New Hampshire went red in 2000 and blue in 2004. The vote totals showed that last election every single town went for Bush and every single city when for Kerry giving Senator Kerry a narrow win. New Hampshire is decidedly purple right now. A popular Democrat is governor and our Senators are Republican. New Hampshire is also a growing state and has had a significant increase in population largely from MA an obviously blue state. However, Senator McCain is beloved in New Hampshire. He did 100 town halls, and he has a fiercely loyal and hard working group of voluteers up here. With his military service and his consistent opposition to pork barrell spending he is well suited for the 'Live Free or Die' state.
